The camshaft/timing chain wear indicator allows you to check the chain stretch on BMW/Mini petrol engines without removing the engine. Thanks to its quick and easy application, both time and the additional costs associated with engine removal can be saved.
Suitable for the following engine codes:
N20, N26, N42, N43, N45, N46
NOTE: The manufacturer does not provide repair instructions for engine code N42. However, all components of the timing chain drive are identical, so the wear indicator can also be used for this engine.
For engine codes N12, N13, N14, N16, N18, N47, please use item no. 117200.

Procedure:
- Remove the original chain tensioner with sealing ring and screw in the special tool.
- The wear indicator/testing tool is screwed in hand-tight using a ratchet, WITHOUT a sealing ring.
- Now turn the motor 4 revolutions evenly by hand in the direction of motor rotation (clockwise) and keep the measuring pin in the clamp under constant observation.
The measuring pin in the middle of the timing chain testing tool moves during rotation; a diagnosis can be made as follows:
- As long as a protrusion of the measuring pin is permanently visible, the timing chain is considered acceptable.
- If the measuring pin shows no protrusion at any point or even disappears into the bore of the chain tensioner dummy, the timing chain must be replaced.
Please note that the engine may only be started with the original BMW/Mini timing chain tensioner installed. The testing tool may only be used to turn the engine over by hand and only in the direction of rotation. Failure to observe these instructions will result in the timing chain accidentally skipping and the valve timing being incorrect, which can lead to engine damage!
